ADVOCAP’s Work-n-Wheels Transportation Program Awarded Grant

January 15, 2013 – Oshkosh, WI – WISCAP member agency ADVOCAP, which serves Fond du Lac, Green Lake and Winnebago counties, has been awarded a $63,000 grant for the Work-n-Wheels transportation program from the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation. The three-year grant will help provide automobile purchase and repair assistance and loans to low-income persons needing reliable transportation to maintain employment.

The foundation grant directly addresses critical transportation needs identified in the 2011 Southern Winnebago County LIFE Study. While public transportation does exist, transit services are not available for second and third shift hours and throughout the weekend, making it difficult for low-income persons to access and sustain employment opportunities that would enable them to achieve a living wage and become self-sufficient.

The Work-n-Wheels auto loan program is designed to help low-income families and individuals obtain an affordable and dependable vehicle. Qualified persons may receive a 30-month interest-free loan to purchase a reliable vehicle under $5,000. Program participants are responsible for title, tax and license fees and must provide proof of full coverage auto insurance. Participants must be employed, possess a valid driver’s license, and demonstrate ability to repay the loan.

The Work-n-Wheels vehicle repair program helps low-income individuals and families keep their vehicles in reliable condition in order to get to work. Participants must be pre-approved for repairs and meet program guidelines. Work-n-Wheels participants also receive active case management, financial literacy training, and basic auto maintenance skills.

The Community Foundation funded the Work-n-Wheels program as part of its competitive Community Impact grants. Grants are supported by the Horace M. Foulk Memorial Fund, an unrestricted fund with the Community Foundation.
